Hardening / Tempering / Annealing
Hardening:
• Heat to 1544°F (840°C) and hold for 4 minutes.
• Rapidly quench in oil.
• Deep freezing after hardening is optional but recommended for improved stability.Tempering:
• Temper for at least 2 hours immediately after hardening to reduce brittleness and form tempered martensite.
• Example: 2 hours at 356°F (180°C) → hardness of ~62 HRC.Annealing: (after hot working, to prevent cracks or breakage)
• Heat slowly to 1328°F (720°C) and hold for 2 hours.
• Reduce temperature to 1202°F (650°C) and hold for another 2 hours.
• Cool slowly in the furnace.
• Remove once the billet temperature is below 570°F (300°C).Etching
Sanding & Surface Prep:
• After hardening, sand the Damascus steel to a 400-grit finish, or up to 1200-grit depending on your desired look.
• Apply a hand satin finish — do not buff after sanding, as buffing can blur the contrast of the layers.
• Wash the steel and dry it with a clean cloth.
• Remove any remaining residue with denatured alcohol. (Do not use acetone.)Etching:
• Always follow safety precautions when handling acids — wear protective gloves, goggles, and work in a ventilated area.
• For carbon Damascus, use a 50/50 ferric chloride and distilled water solution.
• Heat the solution to about 122°F (50°C) in a water bath for consistent results.
• Perform multiple short etches (5 or more) rather than a single long soak.
• Between each etch, brush the billet with an old toothbrush to create an even pattern contrast.Final Steps:
• After etching, neutralize the billet thoroughly using a bicarbonate soda solution to stop the acid reaction.
• Rinse and dry completely before applying any protective oils or coatings.
